RULES & REGULATIONS

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Open to singers 20-35 years of age.

  • Must be a current resident of San Diego County or Imperial County for a minimum of one year.

  • Previous First Place Winners are not eligible to compete.

 
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Incomplete Applications will not be considered. 

  • Submit the Application Form and ALL FOUR accompanying materials listed below no later than Saturday, June 1st, 2024 to: application@hawkawards.org

  • A recent headshot in JPEG form.

  • An up-to-date resume.

  • Legal proof of residency in San Diego or Imperial County (minimum of one year): (one of the following)

    • Rental/lease agreement with signatures of the owner/landlord and the tenant/resident.

    • Home utility bill (including cellular phones).

    • Car registration.

    • Deed/title to residential real property.

    • Mortgage bill.

    • Any school document issued by a U.S. education institution.

    • Medical document.

    • Employment document.

  • Legal proof of birth date: (one of the following)

    • US Passport​.

    • Copy of Birth Certificate.

    • CA Driver's License.

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS​

  • Four operatic arias, in contrasting styles and in their original key and language.

  • A minimum of THREE languages must be represented in your selections.

  • All selections are to be performed from memory.

  • Repertoire PERFORMED in previous Hawk Awards Auditions may not be repeated for a period of THREE YEARS from first time performed.

AUDITION PROCEDURE

  • Three out-of-town judges will be selected to hear applicants.

  • The singer will choose their first selection for the judges and sing it in its entirety.

  • The judges will then request additional selections to be heard from the repertoire list.

  • Number of winners and amounts of award monies are determined by the Hawk Board of Directors in consultation with the judges.

  • If, in the opinion of the judges, none of the contestants meet the high standards required to receive these awards, the money (all, or in part) will be returned to the Hawk Vocal Awards Fund for future awards.

JUDGING CRITERIA
The judges will use the following four criteria, each equally weighted, in rating each contestant. The maximum total score possible being 40.

Vocal Quality 

  • The contestant demonstrates a beautiful vocal quality that would allow for a successful professional career on the operatic and concert stage. The contestant presents a repertoire that is appropriate for the voice and their level of development, demonstrating a balanced chiaroscuro throughout their range, even registers and free of entanglements.

Musicianship

  • The contestant demonstrates accurate pitches and rhythms and the markings of the composer are observed and presented with idiomatic style. ​

Diction and Language Skills

  • The contestant demonstrates the appropriate pronunciation of the full range of each of the languages, including inflection and articulation while displaying a thorough understanding and communication of the text.

Artistry 

  • The contestant demonstrates both an exceptional vocal interpretation and physical/visual presentation that fully expresses the character of each aria.
